Update on Provincial Labour Negotiations with the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA)
As we begin the 2025/26 school year we wish to share some updates and reminders regarding the current Provincial labour negotiations with the Alberta Teachers Association (ATA). We recognize many within our school community - and across the province - continue to discuss these developments.
Fort McMurray Catholic Schools will endeavour to provide timely, clear, and transparent information during this process.
What Is Happening Now?
For now, there is no disruption to learning or any changes to our regular operations.
- There were negotiation sessions earlier this week. It is our understanding there are no further negotiation sessions planned at this time.
- Members of the ATA completed a strike vote in June (June 5-8, 2025) and are currently in a legal position to strike.
- If a strike were to happen, a minimum notice period of 72 hours must be given.
- The Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA) has applied for a lockout vote.
- This would give TEBA the legal authority to lock out employees, with a minimum of 72 hours’ notice.
What Happens if a Strike or Lockout Notice is Given?
Any strike or lockout notice would provide at minimum 72 hours notice.
- In the event of a strike or lockout, all Fort McMurray Catholic Schools will be closed to students.
- Out of School Care (OSC) Programs will be open and could have increased hours. OSC families will hear directly from the Program Manager.
How does Provincial Bargaining Work?
In Alberta, teacher bargaining takes place at two levels:
- Central Bargaining (currently underway) occurs at the provincial level and addresses broad, province-wide matters, such as salary and general working conditions. This is the process that is occurring now.
- The parties involved at this stage include the ATA’s Central Table Bargaining Committee (CTBC) and the Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA).
- TEBA represents all public, separate, and Francophone school boards in this process – including Fort McMurray Roman Catholic Separate School Division.
- Bargaining at a local level occurs following the Central Bargaining process.
Who Are ATA Members in a School Division?
All certificated teaching staff, including school-based leadership teams such as principals and vice principals, are members of the ATA.
We understand that labour uncertainty can be unsettling. We will continue to share timely updates via email and on our website as new information becomes available.
